The following announcement was received from the Military Society of the War of 1812: President Charles C. Lucas, MD of the Military Society of the War of 1812, with full consent of the council, announced that the Military Society of the War of 1812 will fully support the General Society of the War of 1812 as the Bicentennial activities of the War of 1812 are planned and take place.

The Military Society of the War of 1812 will make every effort to participate in the activities at Fort McHenry in 2014 as well as planned special activities in New York City. The Veteran Corps of Artillery of the State of New York (VCASNY) would be happy to provide a ceremonial color guard and ceremonial rifle detail for bicentennial ceremonies. Our troops are part of a historic military command chartered by Congress and formed in 1812 for the defense of New York City.

Officers and soldiers, who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, with a purpose of preventing another British invasion in New York, organized the VCASNY on 25 November 1790 at the City Arms Tavern. Throughout its history, the VCASNY as an organization or as individual members have participated in wars and military actions involving the United States including the American Revolution, The War of 1812, The Civil War, World War 1, World War 11, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and the present conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On 3 January 1826, the Military Society of the War of 1812 was established in the City of New York as a military society composed exclusively of commissioned officers of the War of 1812.'I'he Military Society of the War of 1812 and the Veteran Corps of Artillery were consolidated on 8 January 1848.

Historically, members of the VCASNY are descendants of officers and soldiers that served in the army and navy of the United States during the American Revolution, and in the War of 1812. Today, the VCASNY members must meet certain criteria that include being men of good moral character and possess a desire to serve the state and country.
